LANARK COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER
AUGUST 1996 - 6
The regular meeting of the LCGS was held on Wednesday, July 4, 1996 at
the home of President Irma Willoughby at Mississippi Lake, commencing at
6:30pm with a pot-luck dinner.
What a feast!
After we had all eaten, and while the clean-up was taking place, Mildred
Livingston favoured us with several piano selections which were thoroughly
enjoyed by all.
At 8pm the President called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone there,
and thanking everyone for coming and for all the goodies which were brought.
It was moved by Marilyn Snedden and seconded by Dorothy Lewis that the June
minutes be accepted as printed in the newsletter. Motion carried.
Helen Gillan gave the Treasurer's report showing a bank balance on June 14,
1996 of $3,730.34, after the payment of $227.41 to QuickPrint. Bills were
paid to Algonquin College in the amount of $60.00 and to Walter Brown and
Roberta Sargeant for $5.00 each. Sale of cemetery books
and two memberships amounted to $66.00 for a bank balance of $3,726.34. One
outstanding bill to QuickPrint will be paid when the invoice is received.
It was moved by Marilyn Snedden and seconded by Alice Hughes that the
Treasurer's report be accepted and all bills be paid. Motion carried.
It was moved by Bob Sargeant and seconded by Mildred Livingston that we give
$50.00 to Ann MacPhail in recognition for all the assistance given to us for
the Workshops and in the preparation of our newsletters. Motion carried.
Roberta Sargeant agreed to prepare thank you letters and deliver them with
the cheques to Algonquin College.
Marilyn Snedden reported that she had received a copy of Carol Bennett
McQuaig's new book "Founding families of Bromley Township". The book sells
for $20.00 and Carol has offered to let us have the book for $15.00, which
we could sell for $20.00. It was moved by Marilyn Snedden and seconded by
Helen Gillan that we purchase two copies and place one in our library in
Smiths Falls and donate the second copy to Algonquin College. Motion carried.
Gary Byron donated a copy of his book "The McNeely's of Beckwith" to our
collection in the Smiths Falls library, and was thanked for his generosity.
If anyone is interested in a copy, they are for sale at a cost of $8.00.
The remainder of the evening was spent with "show and tell", with many books,
scrapbooks, pictures, etc. Our hosts, David and Irma Willoughby, exhibited a
map of Mississippi Lake which showed the various sites around the lake. David
explained the water depths and how he put out the buoys each year to warn
boaters of shallow places and protruding rocks, and of rescuing two stranded
boaters after their boat capsized.
Irma and David were thanked for having us in their home for a very interesting
and informative meeting. On the motion of Ernie Miller, the meeting was
adjourned.
---------
The regular meeting of the LCGS was held on August 7, 1996 at the Middleville
Museum at 8pm. President Irma Willoughby welcomed the 27 people in attendance
on such a warm evening.
Due to the fact that there was no newsletter for July, the June minutes will
be approved at the September meeting.
Marilyn Snedden gave the Treasurer's report in the absence of Helen Gillan.
The bank balance as of July 8, 1996 was $3,704.21, with memberships of $100.82
and book sales of $86.00 for a total of $3,891.03. Expenses included
QuickPrint for $165.48, Carol Bennett McQuaig (purchase of 2 books) for
$45.00, post office box rental fees for $69.55 and Middleville Museum fees for
$52.00, leaving a balance of $3,559.00. It was moved by Marilyn Snedden and
seconded by Gary Byron that all bills be paid. Motion carried.
Marilyn Snedden read a letter from Mr. Mullaly who sent us more US stamps as
first class postage is now $0.46 in the US. It was moved by Marilyn Snedden
and seconded by Cecil Buck that we accept these stamps and that they be left
with the Secretary for resale to the members for $0.50 each in order that
members would have stamps to place on self-addressed envelopes sent to
the US. This is much cheaper than purchasing an International coupon for
$3.50. Motion carried. [ED. NOTE: For more information regarding the purchase
of these stamps, contact Roberta Sargeant at 3A D'Arcy St., Perth ON K7H 2T7
(613) 267-2422].
Two copies of the book "Founding families of Bromley Township" were received
from Carol Bennett McQuaig and one will be placed in the library at Algonquin
College. Carol requested that we inform people that she does not have a book
titled "Leaving Lanark", but that it was the theme for our May workshops, of
which she was a guest speaker.
A letter was read from Alice Gilchrist with respect to her enquiry at Crown
Assets on obtaining a used microfilm reader for the Smiths Falls Public
Library. As we are not a registered non-profit organization, it was
suggested that the Secretary write a letter to the Smiths Falls Public Library
suggesting that they apply to have the library's name placed on a waiting list
for a reader, and if the cost is reasonable, we would pay for the reader, or
assist the library in the purchase of a reader.
A letter was read from Mrs. Knox who has old newsletters which she would be
willing to mail to us. It was suggested that we accept her offer and they
will be placed in the silent auction later this year.
Cecil Buck spoke on the possibility of obtaining a charitable tax registration
number, and will do a follow-up at the next meeting. He also spoke on his
research with the "Henderson Directories" which are on microfilm in Winnipeg
and are also in the National Library in Ottawa. He found them to be very
helpful in his research.
Roberta Sargeant reported that they have recorded and published two books of
cemetery recordings through the Kingston Branch OGS: St. Andrews Cemetery at
Watson's Corners (including Machan Cemetery, Park Cemetery, Ferguson Cemetery
and Thomas Ferguson Cemetery), and Laidley's Cemetery and Rokeby Cemetery in
the Maberly area. A copy of each book has been placed at the library of
Algonquin College (Perth) and the LCGS collection at the Smiths Falls Public
Library, compliments of Bob and Roberta Sargeant.
A complimentary copy of Dr. Whyte's "A Dictionary of Scottish emigrants to
Canada before Confederation, Vol. 2" has been sent to us from the Ontario
Genealogical Society. As we had already purchased a copy for our library in
Smiths Falls, we will donate this copy to the library of Algonquin College.
Marilyn Snedden introduced our guest speaker, Claudia Smith, who spoke on the
maple syrup industry in this area and on her upcoming publication "When the
sugar bird sings". It is reported that the natives made hundreds of pounds of
maple sugar each year and traded it for port, flour and ammunition as well as
it being a major part of their diet. Several old boiling sites have been
located in this area. The natives still have a maple syrup celebration at the
start of the season and a celebration of thankfulness at the end of the syrup
season.
Claudia explained how the trees were tapped originally by the slash method
with a small cut below the hole into which a homemade spile was inserted and
the sap drained into a birch bark container or a hollowed-out log. They
realized that this method was doing too much damage to the trees and began
boring a hole in the trees . From 1820 on, maple sugar was being made, and
around 1900, maple syrup was made as before there was not way of storing the
syrup. In 1912, John May wrote about syrup making and how the women did most
of the gathering and boiling, which was very hard labour. After birch bark
containers, potash kettles were used; then in 1867 the flat pans came into
existence and in 1881, the Lightning Evaporator appeared. In 1897, W.J.
Ready had one of the earliest evaporators in this area. Other early
evaporators were owned by the Fergusons in 1898, Davey Barr in 1911 and
several McKay families in 1912.
In 1996 syrup sold for $42.00 - $46.00 / 4 litres
In 1989 syrup sold for $38.00 - $40.00 / 4 litres
In 1979 syrup sold for $18.00 / gallon
In 1957 syrup sold for $5.00 / gallon
In 1934 syrup sold for $1.25 / gallon
In 1897 syrup sold for $0.60 - $0.70 / gallon.
Claudia was thanked for her very informative talk and presentation by Marilyn
Snedden and was presented with a small gift and a copy of the Hopetown
Cemetery book for the Museum.
Tea, cold drinks and timbits were served at the close of the meeting. On the
motion of Donald Oliver, the meeting was adjourned.

McGARRY- Family overview: The seven children of John and Mary (TONE) MCGARRY
emigrated from Ireland in 1820 following the deaths of their parents. One
child, Julia, resided in Montreal, three children James, Ann and Margaret
settled in Niagara Falls in Welland County, and three children Peter,
Elizabeth and Mary settled in Lanark County.
In Lanark County, the McGarry Creek still quietly trickles through the
ancestral Peter McGARRY farmstead and crosses Concession 7 near the old
McGarry School and McGarry Post Office just west of the current village of
Drummond Centre. Sadly, like many other pioneer families, the early
privations and eventual contributions of the McGarry descendants to Lanark
County, Eastern Ontario and the Province have largely gone unrecognized.
Members of first and second born generations became a County Sheriff, another
a MPP, two became magistrates while a fourth became a Provincial Treasurer.
Two McGarry sons of Drummond Township, Henry and his brother Peter, travelled
down the Mormon Trail in the early 1880's to settle in Rexburg, Idaho
where their descendants still run cattle in the Teton Mountains.
In Niagara Falls, a four generation long tradition of McGarrys in the medical
profession continues today after beginning in 1857 when James McGarry
practised medicine first in Perth, then in the US Civil War, and finally in
Niagara Falls.
Lanark query: McGARRY- Peter and Mary (COYLE) McGARRY family of Lot 10,

1820's. Children of Peter and Mary McGARRY: John, William, James, Ellen,
Michael, Peter, Thomas, Alexander, Patrick, Mary Ann, Richard and Henry. Some
related Eastern Ontario surnames: GRACE, CONSITT, MCCAFFREY, SPENCE, MURPHY,

York in 1901.
Children of John and Johan STAFFORD: Tobias, Elizabeth, Isiah, Bridget, John
M., Andrew T., Mary R., Mary Jane, an unknown, James and Catherine (twins),
Patrick, Julia A. And Dorothy (twins).
Mary (McGARRY) DORAN, 1800-1884, 5th born of John and Mary (TONE) McGARRY, wife
of John DORAN (1795-1850) who emigrated from County Wexford, Ireland.

GROGAN- I am researching the GROGAN family that lived in the Pakenham area
from 1861 - sometime after the 1881 census. Specifically, I'm interested in
finding the whereabouts of Robert GROGAN and his family after the 1881
Pakenham census.
Robert and his wife Eliza were listed in the 1850 U.S. (New York census), then show up
in Pakenham for the 1871 census (I don't know where in Ontario they were for
the 1861 census).
The parents of Robert GROGAN were Margaret (McGOWAN) GROGAN and William John
GROGAN (stepfather). Robert's biological father was Pat TIMMONS. Margaret
and John GROGAN were listed in the 1861 Pakenham census with 2 other sons,
Richard and George.
Margaret GROGAN died in Pakenham in 1863 and was buried there. Other members
of the GROGAN family moved out of the area. I have been able to trace them
all except for Robert GROGAN. The information I have is as follows:
Robert Grogan (b.1821, Ireland) husband
Eliza Grogan (b.1831, Ireland) wife
John C. (b.1849, New York, US) son
Isabella (b.1853, New York, US) daughter
Margaret (b.1858, Ontario) daughter, listed as "deaf and dumb"
Mary J. (b.1862, Ontario) daughter
Eliza (b.1864, Ontario) daughter
William (b.1866, Ontario) son
Ellen Fannie (b.1867, Ontario) daughter
Sarah Rachel (b.1870, Ontario)daughter

WARREN- Dr. John Finley WARREN, born 1869, Bathurst Twp., Lanark Co., ON -
died 10 Feb 1906 Devils Lake, ND. He practised medicine and farmed near
Devils Lake and Leeds, ND.
Was he married? Did he have a family? I know that in about 1815, some of
the WARREN family emigrated from Co. Wexford to Bathurst Twp. Others followed
and settled in Frontenac Co. Later some moved to Perth, and other parts of
the family moved to Saskatchewan.
I suspect there must be some members of this WARREN family still in the
vicinity of Perth, and would like to make contact with any of them who are
interested in family history. If you can be of any assistance in this regard,
I will be most grateful.
